Loft Bed Plans – Build Your Own Loft Bunk Bed

If you are planning to build a loft bed for your kid’s room then you will certainly need to look for loft bed plans. A loft bed is an extremely popular choice when it comes to children’s furniture because it allows you to save a lot of space. Since the bed itself is elevated , it frees up more floor space that can be used in other ways such as for storage or a study area. Loft beds are no longer just for children, they are becoming popular among adults as well. A good loft bed will likely costs a couple or more hundred of dollars. If you are good at carpentry then there is no reason why you can’t save money by constructing your own loft bed.

  • Before beginning your search for loft bed plans, the first thing you will need to do is determine where in the room you will place the bed. Knowing the location of the loft bed will also allow you to determine its size. It is usually best to place the loft bed against one corner of a room. This is a good idea for a couple of reasons. First, having the frame of the loft bed lean against adjacent walls will lend it more support. A corner location also means that there will only be one post standing in the way when you travel across or around the room.

  • Prepare the things you will need. Before building your loft bed, you will naturally need to prepare the material first. These will include: a plywood piece, screws, lag bolts, 2 x 6 wooden posts and 4 x 4 wooden posts.

  • A simple loft bed plan would be to use a mattress as a guide when building the bed itself. Simply place the mattress on the floor and build a fitting box on top of it. The plywood piece would serve as the flat bottom of the box while the 2 x 6 wooden pieces would serve as the sides of the box. Use your drywall screws to connect the plywood to the 2 x 6 wooden sides. Apply the screws at two-feet intervals.

  • Once you are done with the box that will serve as the cradle for the mattress, it’s time to build the posts or “legs” that will support the box. Decide how high you want your loft bed to stand and cut four 4 x 4 posts accordingly. Get several people to help you lift the box as you attach the posts to the box using lag bolts. You will also need to add a couple of horizontal braces or beams between the vertical posts to make sure they don’t wobble.

  • Make the ladder by screwing wooden slats that are about one-inch thick between two 4 x 4 posts. Each slat should be about a foot from one another. Attach the ladder to the rest of the bed in such way that it creates a 60-degree slope.
